Finally! I’ve written up the first pattern that I created for my destash for charity project – the Elegant Ribbed Hat.
My goal was to reduce my yarn stash by knitting for charity – creating a few patterns at the same time.
While I want the patterns to be easy enough for most knitters, I also want them to be more interesting and stylish than many charity knitting patterns I’ve seen.
So here is the Elegant Ribbed Hat – a simple ribbed hat with an interesting twist at the end.
Most of the hat is a simple 2.x 2 rib, but the last ten rows use centred, double decreases to shape the crown.
The double decreases used to shape the crown result in unattractive ridges. But after you fasten off the last few stitches you turn the hat inside-out to reveal five ribbed arches that merge and create the crown.
I’ve called this beanie the Elegant Ribbed Hat, but it’s probably better described as the “easy and clever ribbed hat”. I’m quite pleased with both the style and its practicality as a stash buster.
Two balls of almost any 8ply yarn will work – although I have found pure wool to produce the springiest ribs.

I hope you enjoy it as a stash buster and I hope you’ll consider using it to knit for charity.
