I love the idea of a knit-along, but I’ve usually got so many knitting projects in progress that committing to knitting with a deadline is just not realistic. But things have changed, and now I’m down to my last UFO – once it’s off the needles I’ll be without an active project!
My current project is a 4ply top made entirely in 2×2 rib which is hard on the wrists (and brain). I’m mixing this up every second day by crocheting bunnies. (More on the bunnies later this week).
This means I’m finally in a position where I can join a knit-along with a genuine expectation of participating and finishing. A real one with a deadline and an online community and everything – not just me and Marelle saying “yeah we should knit that” when we see a pattern we both like.
The knit-along is Knit for Victory, run by the lovely Tasha at www.bygumbygolly.com. The idea is to knit a 40s inspired piece by the January 31 deadline and share progress pictures as you go.
Although it started on November 4, 2013, it runs until January 31, 2014 which gives me over two months to make something. Unless I go a bit crazy with the crocheted bunnies (not unlikely at this stage), I shouldn’t have many distractions.
I’ve decided to make Susan Crawford’s Town and City Tufted Cape. It looks kind of like a wrapped stitch, or maybe a blackberry style stitch rather than what I’d call “tufted”, but apart from being a bit confused by the name, I’m in love and I can’t wait to cast on.
I’m even going to knit from stash! It’s not exactly “make do and mend” style thrift, but I’m a bit overwhelmed by how much stash I’m hoarding at the moment and I can’t use up all of that excess yarn by making bunnies.
If you’d like to join a vintage themed knit-along, click here for the details and you too can be fashionably late in your sign-up.

That’s really lovely Jen, I can so see you in that cape. Meanwhile I will forge ahead on my knitalong of one on the other cape…

Oh… now I feel guilty for frogging our knit-along project! But I am re-using the yarn for my Knit for Victory cape so I’m not entirely evil.

That little cape is great! Can’t wait to see how it knits up.
Knit for Victory is such a great idea for a knit-a-long. I love the concept of knit-a-longs but have never actually joined one. Maybe one day…

Even though its nearly summer (so not exactly woollen cape weather) I’m really excited. I’ve started to swatch and will probably get to cast on tomorrow. It’s made on 5mm needles so I think it might be a satisfying quick knit.
