For the last two weeks I spent every second of my public transport knitting time working on the GBMJ (giant, brown, man jumper). I was not be tempted by fair isle, lace or fancy double-decreases. I was faithful to the endless rows of knit and purl.
Before you send letters to the Pope to nominate me for sainthood, there are two things you should know. Firslty, I’m not Roman Catholic so I think I’d fall at the first hurdle in the sainthood stakes. Secondly, my dedication was forced upon me because for two weeks all trains on my line were replaced by busses.
You see, I’m not a great passenger when it comes to buses, cars, ferries and trams. I get motion sickness pretty easily which means knitting most things is out of the question. Because I can work on the GBMJ without actually looking at it I was knitting nothing else. In fact, I’m such a bad traveller that I decided I wouldn’t even work on the sleeves – increases could have been dangerous.
I can’t say I relished the idea of working on the jumper but it needed to be done and it wasn’t so bad once I got into it. I think it was the idea rather than the reality that bored me.
Tomorrow, the trains are back which is very good news. The buses were fine, but trains are faster and have more elbow room. Although I really should keep working on the jumper, I might have a few days off.
I’ve cast on for a vest for me which is exciting. Apart from hats, I don’t really knit things for myself. If I’m lucky and focused, I’ll be able to finish both the GBMJ and my vest by the time we go away in late July for Geoff’s birthday. I MUST at least finish his jumper – it is a birthday present after all. I have two weeks left to finish it which is ample time, especially now my trains are back.
