Although a whole week off work to knit and bake and generally stuff around sounds very relaxing, it really is a hazardous way to spend time. Over the past four days I have been finishing some UFOs and working on a new fair isle hat design for the fella.
Here is the hat so-far.
I’m a bit worried about it. The band doesn’t sit right, but I suppose I should block it before I decide. Still, I might have to cut the band and reknit it back down. I hope not.
When I knit fair isle, I carry both strands in my right hand. For me it’s the easiest way and it means I don’t have to look at my work while I knit. I can focus on the chart or watch a movie instead. The down side of this is that with every stitch the yarn rips at the cuticle on my index finger. After a few metres of fuzzy, pure wool dragging across a dry cuticle it gets very painful. If I was smart I’d plan ahead and put a band-aid on my finger before I start knitting. Usually I’m not smart and I don’t plan ahead. Nobody but myself to blame.
I really want to finish the fella’s hat today because I was recently embarrassed to discover that I have NEVER knit anything for him. This came to light when Geoff was buying me a birthday present at my favourite LYS. Among other goodies, the fella bought me a huge knitting bag. He asked the lovely Judith which one she recommended and they got talking about my knitting obsession. Judith asked him if he wore the things I knit for him and he told her that I have never knit anything for him.
Oh the shame! I’m a bad girlfriend/knitter/human being. He models stupid pink beanies for my Ravelry page and I don’t even knit anything for him? What sort of person am I?
Immediately I started the hat. If I can finish it today, next time I see Judith I can honestly tell her that I have knit for Geoff. Even if it is just a hat. (PS, a huge, boring, brown, stocking-stitch jumper for his birthday is part way done so I do knit for Geoff. I just don’t finish anything for him).
