Although I haven’t done much blogging over the past four months, I’ve certainly being doing a lot of knitting. Over the next week I’ll show off some of my finished projects, starting with two baby cardigans I made for my boss’ new granddaughter.
The first one is inspired by the Garden Party Cardigan. I used the trusty Morris and Sons Garter Stitch Baby Jacket pattern with a few variations..
First, I left off the collar and kept it as a simple round neck. I also picked up stitches a few rows below in the green section to make stems for the flowers. I only did this on the back – it wasn’t as effective as I thought it would be I didn’t bother for the front.
The other changes were the crocheted binding around the edges and around the buttonholes. I bought the buttons at the Hand Knit and Crochet Guild Victoria Yarn and Craft Market.
For the embroidery, I used scraps of yarn from the collection of bits and pieces I keep in a biscuit jar. Embroidery on an 8ply garter stitch surface is not easy, so I limited myself to roses and lazy daisy. If you’d like to see how the roses are embroidered, I have a tutorial here.
The other baby cardigan I made for the same baby was yet another Wee Liesl. I keep coming back to this pattern because it always knits up into such a pretty little cardi.
I used Jolie Sock – a Yarn from Red Riding Hood Yarns. It’s 50% silk and 50% merino. It was a bit too fine and silky for the pattern and the weight of the buttons weren’t well supported by the fabric, but it did look and feel lovely. Next time I knit up this pattern I’ll try a 5ply yarn.
Although these two patterns have been my go-to baby knits for years, I’ve found another one that I like better than both. Tomorrow I’ll show you the new baby cardigan that I’m obsessed with.
