The new year didn’t start well for my knitting because it’s just too hot. We’ve just come out of a five-day heatwave that promises to return next week. This is not good knitting weather.
Instead of knitting, I kicked off the new year by sorting and cataloging.
My yarn stash is now sorted, labelled and cataloged on Ravelry. My stash is small enough to fit into two suitcases, but I do have some yarn I’d forgotten about. The process of sorting and listing was a great way to get excited about what I could make with the yarn I already own. It was almost like going to the yarn shop without having to spend any money.
I also had a KonMari moment and dumped all of my vintage patterns onto the floor. After a huge sorting effort I’ve got a box full of patterns that now need new homes and all the patterns I’ve kept are sorted by type.
I’m bringing back Retro Monday this year. So a well organised collection of patterns will make finding what I need so much easier.
For the actual new year knitting, I’ve made some plans. Last year I ended up making – and really enjoying – knitting shawls. Two of them get a lot of wear, but one is a bit too scratchy due to poor yarn choice. I’m not sure how I can soften that one – suggestions are welcome!
In 2019 I’d like to knit another shawl or wrap. I’ve got a lot of 4ply yarn in my stash so I just need to pick a pattern.
I also want to make some practical things like coat-hanger covers, cushions, cotton gloves and a bed jacket! I have so many hats and socks that I can’t justify making any more for myself. I can always whip up a few hats for KOGO and socks for Geoff if I feel the need for a quick knit.
My knitting plans for 2019 aren’t very grand but I think they’re achievable and have enough wiggle-room to sneak in a few surprises.
