Australia used to have lots of woollen mills that made yarn for hand knitting. One of these was Lincoln Mills (Australia) Limited which opened in 1919 and operated until 1980- although it delisted and was bought by Cleckheaton in 1962.
The mills were in Coburg, Victoria in Gaffney Street. I can’t remember if the building is still there (and as I don’t live in West Brusnwick anymore I can’t just go for a wander and have a look). If anyone is in the general vicinity of Coburg and wants to go for a walk down Gaffney Street, then the mills used to look like this in the 1920s. Let me know if you find it.
Lincoln Mills produced a lot of knitting patterns for their yarns and while the one I’ve selected for today’s Retro Monday isn’t dated, I’m guessing its from the mid 1950s.
The picture below is from the back cover.
On the front cover, the little girl looks very much like Princess Anne as a child. The short curly hair and the jumper were typical of how she was dressed and she would have been about the same age as the girl on the cover in the mid 1950s. Just like today, celebrities influenced fashion – even child celebrities
(Please note that I do not own the copyright to any patterns featured in Retro Monday. Unfortunately this means I make or send out copies).
