Now I’m living a town that sees snow every Winter, I’ve become very interested in hats, scarves and gloves. I haven’t knit any gloves with fingers before – only mittens and fingerless mitts. I get the feeling that it might be a good idea to start knitting “real” gloves, with full length fingers before Winter arrives.
This week’s pattern is a Patons booklet from the 1940s. It contains ten patterns – mostly gloves and mittens. All of the patterns are in 4ply or 3ply – so it could be an opportunity for me to break out the stash of sock yarn and whip up some woollies.
Although I said I wanted some gloves, I think I’ll make the hat pictured above on the left. The little tassel is very 40’s and the criss-cross pattern can be added as a fair isle motif or as purl stitches for an embossed look.
It’s called a “jelly bag hat” which is a great description of its conical shape. It’s actually put me in the mood for making some jelly – so I might see if I can raid the quince tree at an abandoned house I know of.
If I do make the hat, I think I’ll make the matching gloves. I’ve only really avoided knitting gloves with fingers because I’m convinced it will be too fiddly. I can turn out a pair of lacy socks without a thought so I’m probably over thinking things.
When it comes to Winter hand warmers, are you a mitten or a glove knitter? Have you every knitted gloves with fingers and would you do it again?
