A very quick post today because I’m flat out at work and madly knitting a present for a birthday tomorrow (nothing like planning ahead!).
Last week I discovered Mary Maxim patterns.
I’d never heard of Mary Maxim patterns before but I stumbled across them on the unreasonably excellent blog No Pattern Required.
The Mary Maxim website has hundreds of vintage patterns that can be bought and downloaded for a few dollars each. They are sorted by decade which is very handy. There are nearly 300 patterns from the 70’s and each one of them ably demonstrates why I find the 70’s a terrifying decade in terms of knitwear.
I bought a 1950’s men’s pattern – the Seahorse Cardigan.
I have assured my husband that I don’t intend to knit this for him – I’d like to make it for myself.
I think the time when men could wear novelty ocean-themed cardigans might have passed which is a shame. There are a lot of similar styles on the Mary Maxim website – have a look and download a novelty cardigan design to frighten your spouse with. It’s worth the price.
(Please note that I do not own the copyright to any patterns featured in Retro Monday. Unfortunately this means I can’t make or send out copies).

The 70s was certainly an interesting time for knitwear! There’s something slightly ‘Western’ about the seahorse cardi, even though I can’t imagine cowboys with seahorses.
