Few things trigger flashbacks to the 80’s like a pastel mohair cardigan. Of course, to relive the true horror of that tasteless decade, a pastel faux-mohair cardigan is even better.
Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you Cleckheaton “Mousse”.
Mousse was a blend of 56% acrylic, 30% wool, 8% polyamide and 6% viscose. It seems to have a fluffy halo like mohair but this blend would have been a lot cheaper and probably less likely to shed everywhere.
This is a pattern book that I initially bought for giggles but later decided the designs were quite wearable. I like all of the garments in the pictures above.
I like all the designs in the pictures below as well, but I keep getting distracted by the cheesy styling.
I’m sure the fibre blend of Cleckheaton Mousse made it unsuitable to wear next to the skin. I’m really worried for the model in the centre picture who forgot to put on her blouse.
Still, its alluring enough to tempt moustached waiters which is a plus for any yarn.
(Please note that I do not own the copyright to any patterns featured in Retro Monday. Unfortunately this means I make or send out copies).

What is going on with that hat in the top right photo!? The overall colour scheme seems very muted, so the bright hat seems so out of place.
The yarn looks and sounds like a nightmare, but I’m not completely hating the patterns themselves. In fact, I could see myself making the collared top the lady with the bright hat is wearing…

The styling cracks me up so much – including that bright pink hat. But the designs are actually quite appealing. I’m seriously considering making the cardigan that the model is wearing without a shirt underneath.

I’m sold – definitely putting this on the list of pattern books to keep an eye out for when op shopping!

I found some Cleckheaton Mousse wool amoungst my souveniers recently and would love to knot it up but can’t work out what ply?? Any suggestions?
Jen says
Hi Alison,
The tension for Cleckheaton Mousse is given as “23.5 stitches to 10cm over stotcking stitch using 3.75mm needles”.
I’d say this is close to a light-ish 8ply. Unfortunately it doesn’t give a row count. If you can get hold of a pattern book for Cleckheaton Studio Mohair 8ply I think Mousse would work quite well.
thanks
Jennifer
