In today’s Retro Monday I’m revisiting a book I featured in 2012 – Traditional Knitting with Wool. I even did a giveaway of a spare copy I had at the time, so today history is repeating because I’m giving away another copy that I found in a local op-shop a few days ago.
To recap, Traditional Knitting with Wool is a publication of the Australian Wool Corporation from 1982. Being from 1982, the models’ hairstyles and the colour combinations haven’t aged well. Fortunately the patterns themselves are classics as you’d expect from a book about traditional knitting.
The first section presents a brief history of knitting followed by features about knitting traditions from Iceland, Norway, Shetland/Fair Isle, Eriskay, Argyll, Aran and South America. Then there are 42 patterns for women, men and children in the different traditional styles discussed.
There are quite a few patterns with turtle necks and there are only four or five sizes for each style. Still, it’s easy enough to alter a turtle neck to a crew neck and several styles have a men’s and women’s versions that change in size only, not in shaping. So if you want a larger women’s size you could just use the men’s pattern.
This is still a great book – my opinion hasn’t changed at all – and I still want to knit more than one of the designs.
If you’d like a copy of this book, leave a comment below. If there is more than one comment I’ll draw a winner using a random number generator. I’m happy to post the book anywhere in the world so this draw is open to everyone.

Hi! I would love to win a copy of this book. I have just finished my first fair isle cowl and am hoping to learn more with the hopes of tackling a colourwork jumper this winter. Thanks for the opportunity to win this book.
