It’s November and Christmas is only 53 knitting days away. That means 7 weeks to turn out at least five pairs of socks.
I made a start this week, casting on a pair of Angee socks by Cookie A. I used a skein of Hedgehog Fibres Skinny Singles in the colour Banana Legs.
When I cast on these socks, my plans were to make them as a Christmas present. I reconsidered when I decided that nobody on my Christmas sock list would be likely to wear bright yellow and lime green socks. Happily for me, I love bright yellow and lime green socks so these I get to keep.
As the name implies, Skinny Singles is a single style yarn. That means its a single ply or strand with a slight twist. This creates a lofty texture that’s not the best choice for socks, but it’s not unusual – there are quite a few single style sock yarns available.
Because the yarn is single spun pure wool, the pattern is lacy, and I have the roughest feet in Australia, these could be the least practical socks I’ve ever made. It also means I’ve set a personal record in terms of soft socks – I’ve never made socks as luxuriously downy.
Before I wear my new soft socks I’ll have to deal with my scary feet. My only new year’s resolution this year was to be nicer to my feet, and while I started the year well, I’ve let things slide. So it’s time to get out the foot file and moisturiser and make my rough, dry trotters worthy of soft socks.
