Yes, I finished off two more of the UFOs. The half done Noro granny square blanket and a version of the Holgate Beanie. Over the weekend they went from this…
… to this.
First, the Noro granny square. Well – I love it but I just don’t know why I made it. I bought the three balls of Noro Taiyo on a whim (an expensive whim) with plans for making a baby blanket. I tried a few different stitches and nothing seemed to work.
The thing with Noro is that you just have to let the yarn do it’s thing. Don’t try to be too clever or fancy because the yarn is already fancy enough with all that colour and texture.
So I decided to just make a huge granny square. I’m almost tempted to buy a few more balls and make it bigger but I’ll resist. I don’t want a finished object to become unfinished again. Besides, I think I have found the ideal use for this smallish rug.
I know this sounds extravagant, but I’m going to give it to the cat. He has his own little blanket at the moment made from a recycled jumper but it’s become very threadbare. He does like to sleep with his blanket and it keeps the cat hair off the furniture. Also, it will look a lot nicer on the sofa (under the cat) than his current blanket.
After this I think I’m done with granny squares for a while. I do have an ongoing granny square project that I’m working on (consistently – so it’s not a UFO), but apart from that it’s time to move on with my crochet.
The Holgate Beanie was to replace one I made for myself last winter. I used it for a display in a yarn shop where I was teaching and someone stole it! Seriously – who steals from a yarn shop? It made me wish I had some horrible scalp condition the thief could catch from wearing my stolen beanie.
If you see anyone wearing this, beanie around Melbourne – tell them I want it back. Bastard. (Re the link – the red and mustard coloured one was stolen, not the grey and green one).
Anyway, because I plan on teaching a “design your own fair isle hat” course next year, I thought it would be prudent to have some samples for display – which is another reason I’m glad to have completed this one.
Now there are only ten UFOs to go. I’m quite impressed with how I’ve done so far. Two of them are almost complete and just need the ends sewn in so I should be able to post about them very soon.
Time to select my next UFO.

I have a story for you re: stolen items…
A belly dancing stalwart of melbourne used to run a shop in the bayside suburbs. One day she had the sale rack out in front of the store and when she brought it in she noticed someone had stolen a bra and belt costume.
2 years later someone walked in and said, oh my boyfriend bought me this, but it’s not right for me, how much would you buy it from me for…
and she looked at it and said – that’s mine, it was stolen 2 years ago! and the girl bolted!

That’s terrible! I know of a music shop in Sydney that had a bassoon stolen and a 14 year old tried to sell it back to them the next day. Seriously – a bassoon!
I am fully prepared to crash-tackle any person I see wearing my beanie on the street.
