This afternoon I decided to round up all the escaped balls of yarn. You know the ones, they jump out of your stash and set up colonies under the bed, on the coffee table and – in my case – on the piano.
There was actually more than is in the picture. There were 10 balls of Rowan Cashsoft that I was going to put into a stash sale, but now I’m just not sure. I probably wont ever use it but I’m just not ready to say goodbye to it either. So it’s now back in the stash until I feel ready to part with it or knit with it.
Some of the yarns featured in my ad-hoc display were from the first four victims of my UFO eradication programme.
These four items…
…became this.
I didn’t just undo all that knitting as an easy alternative to finishing the items. I had very good reasons for deciding not to proceed with each one.
The red purse was kind of sad. I really wanted to finish that one and it wouldn’t have taken long, but I no longer have the magazine the pattern was in. When I had a magazine purge a few months ago I must have gotten rid of the one I needed to complete this purse.
The lemon yellow front of a cardigan was never going to work. It’s Naturally “Stella” 4ply bamboo and its such a beautiful yarn I don’t want to waste it on something I just don’t feel is worthy. So Stella was wound back into balls to wait for a better project.
The milky white cotton shawl was the prototype for a shawl design that I’m releasing this week. I’ve since knit a far better version and again, the yarn deserves to be something spectacular (its Heirloom 4ply Cotton). I will probably knit the shawl again using this same yarn, but being a prototype, this result just wasn’t good enough the first time around.
Finally the lovely cabled Stockport vest. I probably will knit Stockport using this yarn (Rowan Cocoon), but it’s been sitting around 25% done for just over 2 years. My tension has probably change a lot since then and if I’m going to knit it, I’ll start again from scratch.
Now I’m down to 12 UFOs – and there are two more I’ve finished knitting/crocheting but until the ends are woven in I’m not going to call them done.
Time to reach into the laundry basket of UFO’s and select another victim.

The 4ply bamboo sounds divine. Do you have any ideas in store for it yet?

I’d like to try one of those cardigans that are knit in a lace to sock weight yarn – maybe Wray? I’ve seen it made in Rowan Fine Milk Cotton so the bamboo could work really well.
It’s just a beautiful yarn and I love the feel of bamboo.
Must finish all my UFOs first though!
